Pink Flamingo Cinema is a unique arthouse and independent film space in Marrickville, Sydney, hosted and run by Ing Dieckmann. Since 2019, I have collaborated with Pink Flamingo Cinema to develop their online presence, branding, and promotional materials, crafting a visual identity that reflects their playful yet gritty approach to cult and alternative cinema.

When the cinema first launched, I assisted in designs for their original WordPress site alongside a suite of posters and social media campaigns that helped solidify their distinct identity. However, by 2023, it became clear that the WordPress platform wasn’t the right fit, while the initial design was visually striking, the backend proved too cumbersome for host Ing to update efficiently. As a result, keeping programming details accurate and accessible became a challenge, impacting engagement and ticket sales.

In 2024, after a brief hiatus, the cinema decided it was time for a complete digital refresh. I transitioned the entire website to the Cargo platform, overhauling both the visual identity and usability to create a cleaner, more intuitive user experience. This redesign embraced a more pared-back, vintage-inspired, DIY aesthetic, aligning with the raw and underground spirit of the venue while improving accessibility for both audiences and the cinema’s management team. The simplified UI now allows Ing and the team to easily update session times, film details, and ticketing information, ensuring that audiences always have the latest programming at their fingertips

The outcome:
This shift wasn’t just an aesthetic choice - it was a smart business decision. The improved clarity of the site has dramatically enhanced customer engagement, making it effortless for audiences to browse upcoming films and secure tickets. The results speak for themselves: since launching the revamped site, nearly every new season has sold out, with customers now easily navigating the platform to find the information they need.

Beyond the website, I continue to work closely with Pink Flamingo Cinema, producing unique posters and social media graphics that amplify their voice in the Sydney film scene. From bold, neon-infused campaigns to nostalgic, VHS-era inspired designs, each project is crafted to honour the cinema’s cult appeal while keeping audiences engaged and excited for what’s next.
This ongoing collaboration has demonstrated how thoughtful design choices can directly impact business success. By merging a strong visual identity with a highly functional platform, Pink Flamingo Cinema now thrives both online and in-person, ensuring its legacy as a staple of Sydney’s alternative film community.
